Learn about your Bellingham family law team, Kathy and April
Kathy Marshall is an oil company brat and an oil company ex-wife. Her dad’s job required the family to move every few years, which is why Kathy started school in the Black Forest of Germany, and graduated high school from the American School of The Hague in The Netherlands. Kathy ended up at Texas A&M University where she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management. She jokes that the worst case of culture shock was her instant indoctrination in country music and Aggie football.
Kathy married in 1984, and her husband’s oil-related job moved them to Louisiana. They divorced in 1991. Kathy still has a tiny bit of a southern accent from this time in Texas and Louisiana.
Kathy moved to Western Washington and obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in International Studies from the University of Washington. She earning a scholarship to Seattle University School of Law, and during this time was an intern at the Attorney General’s Office. She graduated in 1999. To this day Kathy refers to her time in law school as her “mid-life crisis”.
After law school, Kathy served as a criminal Deputy Prosecuting Attorney (which also required her to serve as Deputy Coroner!) for Klickitat County. She then served as a criminal defense attorney in Klickitat and Skamania Counties.
Kathy wanted to return to Western Washington, and jumped at the chance to become District Court Public Defender for San Juan County. Her courtroom performance must have impressed the local prosecutor, and in the rare circumstance where a prosecutor hires a criminal defense attorney, Kathy was offered the position of Support Enforcement Officer.
In 2009, Kathy returned to living on the mainland to practice family and criminal law for a Bellingham firm. She soon decided to become her own boss, and hung out her shingle in 2010 to practice family law exclusively. Kathy’s favorite cases involve helping children transition through the legal processes related to family law and divorce.
Personally, Kathy enjoys theater, wine tasting, cooking, and exploring Whatcom County and Western Washington. Her ultimate goal is to eventually retire and live on a sailboat.
April Clark joined Kathy Marshall Law in the dual role of paralegal and office manager, a position that April is perfectly suited for after four years’ experience in the legal field, combined with an additional 20 years in customer service and office administration. This background enables April to work effectively with clients to help them manage their cases while simultaneously making sure the office runs smoothly. She likes the challenge of keeping many balls in the air; her track record proves that she doesn’t fumble them.
Through her varied legal experience, April knows that every case and every family is unique, and that one of the most important aspects of effectively handling any family law matter is to discover what each client needs, and to support those needs. Yes, documents need to be produced and filed, emails and faxes need to be handled, but the heart of every case is the need to help every client and every family move forward in a productive, healthy manner.
April functions as a core team member who supports clients as they transition through these challenging days to the easier ones ahead.
April is a Pacific Northwest native who is married, with three great kids. Her hobbies include paddle boarding, hiking, reading, and drinking wine, not necessarily in that order.
